Just when the door seemed to open
for champions Fambridge A to really get close to leaders Mapledene A it was
slammed shut last week when they could only field two players against Maldon
A and whilst Peter Ballard was unbeaten Dave Bassett and John Cleasby each
managed to get the better of Mark Stones to secure a draw for Maldon and
while Fambridge were slipping up Mapledene A (Lee Prentice, Babul McLeod,
Gary Baker) resumed normal service with a 9-1 win over Maldon B. Three wins
from Eric Green got Stow Maries A back to winning ways, 8-2 against Cold
Norton A, once again it was Neil Want who recorded the only points for Cold
Norton. Mapledene B just edged past Fambridge B 6-4 in a match where no
player remained undefeated, Bill Smith and Nigel Lamb each won twice for
Mapledene as did Peter Mynard for Fambridge. Jenny Harrison was in fine form
for Fambridge C as they recorded a fine 7-3 win over Stow Maries C to move
well away from any danger of relegation.
Division two promotion hopefuls Stow
Maries D slipped up 4-6 at Cold Norton where Simon Lowman was in superb form
to remain unbeaten and received excellent support from Roy Gandy who won
twice. West Maldon A could not take full advantage as they could only record
a 6-4 win over a two man Maldon C team for whom Roger Warren was unbeaten so
the advantage looks to have moved to Woodham B (Lee McHugh, Graham Briggs,
Daniel Richardson) as they ran out comfortable 8-2 winners over Mayland
(Colin Barrel, Peter Orriss, Ralph Gibson). Three wins from Tim Cramphorn
helped ease Woodham D’s relegation worries and earned them a draw in a hard
fought match with Maldon D that saw seven games require a deciding set.
Division three leaders Maldon E were
beaten for just the second time this season when they visited Maldon U3A C
and found Richard Skidmore in excellent form recording three wins and with
good support from Tony Murray who won twice they were able to extend their
wining run to four matches. Maldon G also made a mockery of the league table
when thanks to three wins each from John and Ryan Sanderson they hammered
West Maldon B 8-2.

Just as it looks as though the
division one title race is all but over along comes a real shock of a result
to give chasing Fambridge A a ray of hope, that result was leaders Mapledene
A (Lee Prentice, Babul McLeod, Andrew Halling) being held to a draw by Stow
Maries C thanks to a tremendous hat trick from Kevin Worthington which
obviously inspired team-mate Peter Layzell to record a fine win over Lee
Prentice and the pair combined to take the doubles. Meanwhile Fambridge A
were despatching a two man Maldon B 10-0. At the other end of the table
Woodham A recorded a rare win at home against Stow Maries A thanks to two
wins apiece from Ev Lucas and Jean Chasmer who was particularly delighted to
beat Herbie Smith (after about 30 years of trying). Although still bottom
the win give Woodham a glimmer of hope as they are now just six points from
safety with a game in hand on their rivals, one of which is Cold Norton A
who were soundly beaten by Fambridge B as Peter Mynard won his three and
Steve and Chris Buer each won twice with Neil Want recording the only
successes for Cold Norton.
Division two could not get much
tighter at the top with just a point between the top three after a great
performance from wiley old veteran Dave Goody saw Stow Maries D score a fine
6-4 win over the youngsters of leaders Woodham B while second placed West
Maldon A thumped Woodham D 8-2 with Sean Clift winning three and Tim
Huxtable and Chris Ciniglio each winning twice. This race will go right to
the last week but it does look as though the Woodham side have the easier
run in with Stow and West Maldon due to play each other in their final
match.
In division three Maldon U3A C (Tony
Murray, Richard Skidmore, Mukrund Ravel) became the first side to beat the
Joiners when both Mark Shorney and Paul Freeman have played together and
while none of them got the better of Paul freeman they all beat Mark Shorney
who had previously only lost twice all season!

Division one looks to be sorting out some sort of order
as teams caught up with re-arranged matches last week. Mapledene A are firm
favourites to capture the title as they despatched Fambridge B 10-0 while
nearest challengers Fambridge A could only field a two man team and win 7-3
against Stow Maries B. Maldon A look certain to finish third following their
9-1 win over Fambridge B whose solitary success came when Chris Buer scored
an impressive win over Dave Bassett. Stow Maries A (Ian Whiteside, Nicky
Reece-Ford, Tony Forster) won 6-4 against their B team despite coming up
against an in form Gary Brignall who was unbeaten for the losers. At the
bottom Woodham A look doomed following their 1-9 loss at Stow Maries C but
the other relegation place looks as though it will be between Maldon B and
Cold Norton A,. Cold Norton A seemed to take an advantage when they won 7-3
when the two sides met thanks to three wins from Neil Want and a brace from
Gus Heath but the Maldon managed an excellent draw with Stow Maries A as
Brian Riedling and Ken James each won twice and Shirley Carroll recorded an
excellent win over Peter Hance while Cold Norton were hammered 9-1 by
Mapledene B (Dave Moles, Richard Hiskey, Dave Calleja).
While Stow Maries D are currently top of division two
they look likely to be caught by both West Maldon A and Woodham B who met
last week in a match that could be decisive to the final places Woodham B
(Lee McHugh, Graham Briggs, Daniel Richardson) ran out 8-2 winners.
Elsewhere three wins each from Peter Chasmer and Jean Chasmer saw the
improving Woodham C through to a 7-3 win over Maldon D. Three wins each from
Graham Pryke and Keith Martin were enough to ensure that Maldon C won
against Maldon U3A A.
In division three a hat trick from Mark Shorney was not
enough to prevent The Joiners going down 4-6 to Woodham G as Roy Davis,
Scott Perry and Matt Carter each won twice for the Woodham side. Leaders
Maldon E could only scrape past a two man West Maldon B team 6-4 but still
look pretty certain to win the division.

Most of the interesting action this week was in the
second division where leaders Stow Maries D continued to pile up the points
with an 8-2 win over struggling Maldon U3A A, Dave Goody was unbeaten for
Stow while Norman Hayes recorded both the U3A successes and Stow will need
those points as the chasing pack have games in hand on them. A fine team
performance saw second place West Maldon A (Tim Huxtable, Gary Smith, Sean
Clift) ease past Cold Norton B although none of them could get the better of
Simon Lowman. Woodham B moved in to third spot with a 7-3 win over a two man
Maldon D team thanks to Graham Briggs. Maldon C kept in touch with a 7-3 win
over Maldon U3A B thanks to three wins from Roger Warren and also a notable
win for Alistair Cameron (playing up from division three) over Bill Puxley.
Colin Barrell was once again in fine form for Mayland but they were still
held by struggling Woodham D.
In division three The Joiners recorded a fine 6-4 win
over Maldon G with Paul Freeman maintaining his 100% record in the division
and getting good support from Mike Ross who won twice. Neil Salmon was
unbeaten for West Maldon B as with only a two man team they fought out a 5-5
draw with St. Lawrence A. Another hat trick from Jack Ashley saw Woodham F
through to a 6-4 win over Maldon U3A C.
Division one leaders Mapledene A (Andrew Halling, Keith
Shepherd, Babul McLeod) cruised to a 9-1 win over Fambridge C although they
did lose the doubles, while their closest challenger Fambridge A were
beating Mapledene B 8-2 with Peter Ballard and Mark Stones both unbeaten for
Fambridge.
