In
division one Mapledene B tried to do their A team a favour by fielding a
side featuring both John Monk and Stuart Gibbs against second placed
Fambridge A and while they came close they were defeated 4-6 as Mark Stones
was unbeaten for Fambridge and Peter Ballard recorded an impressive win
over Stuart but lost to John. Fambridge B were less trouble to Mapledene A,
going down 2-8 although John Poysden impressed with wins over Charles
Sweeney and Glen Johnson while Lee Prentice was unbeaten for Mapledene as
they continue their progress to a third consecutive title (10th out of the last 12). Woodham A had a
hat-trick from Lee McHugh to thank for getting them through a close
encounter with basement team Stow Maries D for whom Dick Wyman won twice. Kevin
Worthington of Stow Maries B lost his first match against anyone other than
champions elect Mapledene A when Neil Want of Cold Norton got the better of
him but it proved no problem for his team as Hector Rogers and Mark Brown
were both unbeaten and Stow ran out 9-1 winners. Another
hat-trick man was Keith Martin of Maldon B but his performance could not
prevent a 4-6 defeat as Dave Marsh, Terry Hyland and Tim Pulham each won
twice for Stow Maries C to secure a 6-4 win.
The top
of the table clash in division two was dominated by Glen Laing who retained
his unbeaten record for West Maldon but could not prevent them
going down 4-6 to Maldon E. It was generally expected that Glen’s biggest
test would come against Tom Elder but in fact he beat Tom with some ease in
straight sets but was then pushed all the way by young Ryan Sanderson who
was 2 sets to 1 ahead and seemingly in control when Glen used all of his
experience and determination to edge a win. Still Tom and Ryan each won
twice to Keep Maldon E to move to within six points of West Maldon with a game in hand. Maldon D are also in the mix and kept up their challenge with an
8-2 thumping of Stow Maries F with Shirley Carroll unbeaten and Dawn Baldry and
Vicki Stredder each just losing to Dave Porter.
Maldon
U3A (Bill Puxley, Tony Reece-Ford, Richard Skidmore) are making a late
charge for promotion from division three and were impressive in despatching
Maldon H 10-0 while Woodham E are going in the opposite direction suffering
a defeat at the hands of St. Lawrence A.

The two
bottom sides in division one, Stow Maries D and Maldon B, met and fought
out a draw, a result that is little help to either team in pursuit of survival.
Ryan Pitt was the hero for Maldon with three wins while Dick Wyman and Neil
Freeman each won twice for the Stow side. Kevin Worthington was
once again in fine form for Stow Maries B with three wins against the
Maldon A trio of Hamish Innes, John Cleasby and Ken James who won all the
other matches to record a 7-3 win. Woodham A picked up an unexpected couple
of points at Mapledene A as both Ev Lucas and Lee McHugh beat Babul McLeod
and they could have had more as they lost another three matches close in
the fifth set.
Maldon
E signalled their intention to put in a significant challenge in division
two by fielding their strongest trio of Tom Elder, Brian Riedling and Ryan
Sanderson to beat the unfortunate West Maldon B 10-0. However they will be
hard pushed to catch current leaders West Maldon A as long as they continue
to include the unbeaten Glen Laing in their line-up as he led them to a
convincing 8-2 win over Cold Norton B whose two wins both came from Chris
Hancox. Another side looking to make a move for promotion could be Mayland
A (Colin Barrell, Ralph Gibson, Brian Speller) who
scored an impressive 10-0 win over the usually steady Stow Maries E.
Woodham
D look to be comfortable at the top of division three following a 10-0 win
over their own G team but the second promotion place is a really open
contest. Maldon U3A led by three wins from Bill Puxley edged ahead of
Maldon G with a 7-3 win at Maldon while Woodham E were embarrassed by
Maldon H as young Oliver Gregory scored a hat trick to lead the Maldon side
to a great 6-4 success.

Division
one leaders Mapledene A continue to set a hot pace at the top with another
emphatic win, this time a 9-1 win over Stow Maries C with Gary Baker and
Glen Johnson both unbeaten while Dave Marsh recorded the solitary point for
Stow when he beat Andrew Halling. Fambridge A (Peter Ballard, Mark Stones,
Peter Mynard) kept in touch with a whitewash of Maldon B. Three wins from
Dave Bowles and a couple from Matt Rolfe gave Mapledene B a 6-4 win over
Stow Maries A. Cold Norton had three wins from Steve Sawyer and a couple
from Dave Hancox as they edged out Woodham A 6-4.
West
Maldon A maintained their position at the top of division two with a hard
fought 6-4 win over Stow Maries F thanks to three wins from Glen Laing,
while Maldon E kept up their challenge with a 7-3 win over Stow Maries E as
both Tom Elder and Brian Riedling were unbeaten. Cold Norton B slipped to a
4-6 defeat as Jean Chasmer, Alan Dadswell, and Robert Shrimpton each won
twice for Woodham B.
Division
three leaders Woodham D (Mike Burton, Diane King, Mike Matlin) were 7-3
winners at home to St. Lawrence B as Michael Pratley maintained his
unbeaten record for St. Lawrence. Maldon U3A fought out a draw with Mayland
B with Bill Puxley winning twice for U3A and Jon Stevens unbeaten once
again for Mayland getting good support from his dad Ken who won twice.
Mayland B also recorded an excellent 9-1 win over Maldon H with Jon again
unbeaten and Kris Nicholls recording his first hat trick of the season.
Maldon G (Mike Ecart, Rob Sach, Ross Wheeler) just managed a 6-4 win over
Woodham F despite a superb hat trick from Woodhams’s
oldest player Roy Davis.
The
league closed tournament will be held at William De Ferrers Centre in South
Woodham Ferrers on the weekend of 24th and 25th March
with entries required by 1st February.

Following
the Christmas break some teams were a little slow in getting back into
action so we had very few significant results coming through this week
although their were some notable individual performances and some not so
notable. In division one Maldon A suffered a Christmas hangover as they
lost 3-7 to Mapledene B although the Mapledene line-up included both Dave
Bowles and John Monk who were unbeaten and Lin Attridge picked up a good
win over Ken James to help the cause. Mapledene A and Fambridge A both
returned to action with 10-0 wins over Maldon B and Woodham A respectively.
In
division two Martin Goodworth turned in the performance of the season in
becoming the first player to go unbeaten against Maldon D with a hat trick
for bottom side Maldon F against the title chasing Maldon D trio of Dawn
Baldry, Shirley Carroll and Vicki Stredder, the D team still ran
out 7-3 winners but still a great night for Martin. Ralph Gibson was in
good form for Mayland A as they saw off Maldon C 7-3 and Dave Goody showed
improved form as his three wins led Stow Maries E to a comfortable 7-3 win
over struggling Woodham C although Adam Morrison did pick up a couple for
the Woodham side. Tom Elder and Ryan Sanderson were both untroubled in
winning their singles in straight sets as Maldon D ran out comfortable
winners against the disappointing Woodham B.
Woodham
D moved further ahead at the top of division three with a convincing 9-1
win over Woodham F with Mike Burton and Diane King both unbeaten while the
solitary success for the losers came when Peter Woodgate beat Mike Matlin.
Young Oliver Gregory scored a couple of impressive wins for Maldon H
against St. Lawrence A including becoming only the third person this season
to beat Bob King, however those wins were the only his side could record as
Terry Frost led St. Lawrence to a 8-2 win. Michael Pratley maintained his
one hundred percent winning record for St. Lawrence B but could not prevent
them going down 4-6 to Mayland B for whom the father and son pair of Ken
and Jon Stevens each won twice.

Mapledene
A took firm control of the division
one title by scoring an impressive 9-1 win over their only challengers
Fambridge A I don’t know if the Mapledene trio of Kevin Read, Charles
Sweeney and Duncan Taylor were on top form or if the Fambridge team of
Peter Ballard, Marko Jovic and Mark Stones suffered an off night but
whatever it was it was the most one sided encounter between these two teams
for many a year, the only success for Fambridge came when mark beat Charles
otherwise it was one way traffic. It can be of little consolation to
Fambridge that their B team managed to beat Mapledene B 7-3 thanks to
hat-tricks from Jamie Willson and John Poysden. At the other end of the
table Cold Norton A eased their relegation fears with an emphatic 9-1 win
over bottom side Stow Maries D, who look doomed even at this stage of the
season, Steve Sawyer and Steve Maltby were unbeaten for Cold Norton with
Stows consolation coming when Gareth
Davies beat Simon Lowman.
West Maldon A moved to the top of division two with a 9-1 win over their B team
but this is still a very close division and the battle for the two
promotion places will go all the way. Cold Norton B kept up their challenge
with a 7-3 win over a two man Mayland A, most notable win was Chris Hancox
beating Colin Barrell. Stow Maries E (Brian Ellis, Dave Goody, Mick
Robinson) had a peculiar couple of matches, first they went down 0-10 to a
Maldon D team of Shirley Carroll, Tom Elder and Ryan Sanderson and then
they drew 5-5 with a Maldon E team of Ryan and John Sanderson with Brian
Riedling but this time Ryan only won one match and it was the hat-trick
from Brian that secured the draw.
In division
three St. Lawrence B sprang a surprise with a good 6-4 win over promotion
chasing Woodham E thanks to three wins from Michael Pratley and a couple
from Dia Christie. Three wins from Mike Burton
ensured that Woodham D remain top as they beat Maldon G 6-4. Maldon U3A
kept up their good recent run of form with a 6-4 win over Mayland B thanks
to a rare appearance from Norman Hayes who was unbeaten and they followed
that up with a 7-3 win over St. Lawrence B where none of their trio of Bill
Puxley, Tony Reece-Ford and Richard Skidmore could get the better of
Michael Pratley who remains unbeaten this season.

Fambridge
A (Peter Ballard, Peter Mynard, Mark Stones) moved to just three points behind
leaders Mapledene A with an emphatic 10-0 win over bottom side Stow Maries
D. Stow Maries A brought Woodham A’s recent run of wins to a halt as both
Eric Green and Peter Hance were unbeaten in their 7-3 win. Stow Maries C
could only field two players against Mapledene B but that did not matter as
both Dave Marsh and Gary Brignall were too good for the Mapledene trio of
Nigel Lamb, Dave Mole and Dave Calleja and ran out 6-4 winners.
Division
two leaders West Maldon A (Chris Ciniglio, Glen Laing, Nick Duce) were too
good for Woodham B and ran out 9-1 winners although several matches went to
a deciding end, the biggest cheer of the evening came when Glen Laing
secured his win over Jean Chasmer with a backhand smash, a shot he had been
trying with no success whatsoever all night (sorry all season I’m told).
Three wins from Tom Elder and two from the ever improving Ryan Sanderson
led Maldon E to an impressive 6-4 win over a strong Mayland A team. Maldon
C had debutants Paul Freeman and Mark Shorney to thank for a 7-3 win over
Cold Norton B while Maldon D were comfortable 8-2 winners over Woodham C
thanks to three wins from Dawn Baldry and two each from Vicki Stredder and Shirley Carroll who were both beaten by Val
Board. West Maldon B moved away from the relegation zone with a 7-3 win
over Maldon F thanks to a hat trick from Bradley Smith.
Division
three leaders Woodham D went down to their first defeat of the season at
Maldon U3A with Bill Puxley leading the way with three wins, although U3A
started slowly they have beaten two of the top teams in the last couple of
weeks and could be a dark horse for one of the promotion places. The junior
trio of Woodham G (Richard Jovic, Cameron Grey, George Stacey-Stevens)
scored a 6-4 win over St. Lawrence B although none of them could get the
better of Michael Pratley who remains unbeaten at this level this season.
Maldon H recorded their first win of the season with a 7-3 win also over
St. Lawrence B (a busy team who had two games this week) with Julie Lake leading the way with three
wins. Scott Perry was in fine form again for Woodham E as he led his
weakened team to a 6-4 win over Woodham F.
